Re: [lammps-users] error with atc output file in paraview

Matthias, this issue has been identified as a bug in the latest version of paraview.  I am told it will be included in the 3.8.2 release later this summer.  Until then, continue using 3.6.  See below for what I received from the paraview developers.
best,
Jeremy

Jeremy,
ParaView 3.8 is out the door, and unfortunately we did not get this bug fix into it.  ParaView 3.8.2 should be out later this summer, and this bug should be fixed in it.

Sorry about that,

Alan

Thanks Utkarsh.  Please let us know when all is well so we can migrate to 3.8 and recommend to our customers that they do the same.

Jeremy,

It certainly is a bug. I am new to Ensight format and just wanted to
get a quick sanity check from you guys to ensure that the file was
indeed valid.  Thanks for clarifying.

Hi Alan, a quick update.  We were only writing the geometry once to save space because it is static.  This works in ensight and paraview 3.6.  Is this no longer supported in 3.8?

I am passing this to Jeremy, who knows lots more about this format than I do.

Jeremy - Notice Utkarsh's comment below.  Is this a problem with the geo file you created?

Alan,

I was able to locate the problem. Looks like when reading OTC.geo
file, the reader hangs while trying to find a "BEGIN TIME STEP"
element in the geo file for the 2nd timestep. Looking at the file
OTC.geo, there's indeed just 1 BEGIN TIME STEP entry, while all other
files have multiple BEGIN TIME STEP entries. Can you verify that
that's legitimate?

Mind having someone take a look at 10756?  This needs to be fixed for 3.8.2.

Thanks,

Matthias, I tried using paraview 3.8 and I think I see the same problem.  I'm not sure what the issue is since we are using a standard format readable by other visualization codes (e.g., ensight) and it works with older versions.  For now I suggest using paraview 3.6.2 until we can figure out what the problem is.

Jeremy

Hi Matthias, I can view your results in paraview 3.6 on my mac with no problem.  I have not "upgraded" to paraview 3.8, but I will try and let you know how it goes.

I'll let the ATC package folks respond to this.

Dear lampps community,

my version of lampps is 07-Apr-2010, so it's the latest stable release right now. I am facing the following problem: The output file created with the command:
fix_modify AtC transfer output [name] [frequency] tensor_components
from the atc-package crashes the visualization software Paraview.
The version of Paraview I'm using is the latest stable release: 3.8.0. I tried this one on an i386 and a x86 linux architecture, both have the same problem. I attached 1 output file from the atc example simulation bar1d_ttm to this e-mail for anybody who would like to try it himself. In the input file I simply added the command mentioned above. It is possible to open the file, but when going to the next frame I get the following output and Paraview crashes:

ERROR: In /home/kitware/ParaView-3-8/ParaView-3.8/ParaView/Servers/Filters/vtkEnSightReader2.cxx, line 308
vtkEnSightGoldBinaryReader2 (0x8da1cb0): error reading geometry file

ERROR: In /home/kitware/ParaView-3-8/ParaView-3.8/ParaView/VTK/Filtering/vtkExecutive.cxx, line 757

Modified Time: 128298
Reference Count: 1
Registered Events: (none)
Request: REQUEST_DATA
ALGORITHM_AFTER_FORWARD: 1
FORWARD_DIRECTION: 0
FROM_OUTPUT_PORT: 0

I'm not sure whether this is an error of the output file or from Paraview. So I wrote an e-mail to the developers of Paraview, too. In case I get a response, I will add it here. Does anybody in this community have an idea how to solve this problem?.

Thanks for your suggestions in advance.
Sincerely Yours
M.Busse
